The Challenge: Accessing School Results in Uganda
At the end of every school term, parents across Uganda anxiously await their children's examination results. Traditionally, accessing these results has been anything but convenient. Most parents have had to rely on one of these methods:
- Waiting for their child to bring home a printed report card — This can take days after the term ends, and report cards sometimes get lost.
- Visiting the school in person — For parents who live far from the school or have demanding work schedules, this is a major inconvenience.
- Calling the school — Schools are often overwhelmed with calls at the end of term, and getting through to a teacher or administrator can be impossible.
- Waiting for WhatsApp messages — Some schools send results via WhatsApp groups, but this is unreliable, lacks privacy, and requires internet access.
For parents in rural Uganda, where internet connectivity can be limited and smartphones are not universally available, these challenges are even more pronounced. Many parents simply do not find out how their children performed until weeks after the term has ended.
DesisPay changes this entirely. Through our USSD and SMS services, any parent with any phone — even a basic feature phone — can check their child's school results instantly, without needing the internet.
"I live in Karamoja and internet is not always available. But with DesisPay's USSD service, I checked my daughter's results on the same day the school released them. I did not even have to leave my home." — Parent, Moroto District
Why USSD Is the Right Solution for Uganda
USSD (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data) is the technology behind those menu-based services you access by dialling codes like *165# or *185#. Here is why it is perfect for accessing school results:
- Works on every phone — From the simplest Nokia feature phone to the latest Samsung Galaxy, USSD works on all of them.
- No internet required — USSD runs over the basic cellular network. If you can make a phone call, you can use USSD.
- No app download needed — There is nothing to install or update.
- Instant response — Results appear on your phone screen within seconds.
- Works on both MTN and Airtel — DesisPay's USSD service is accessible from both major networks in Uganda.
- Low cost — USSD sessions are free or cost a nominal amount, making them accessible to all income levels.
What You Need Before Checking Results
Before you dial the USSD code to check your child's results, make sure you have the following:
- An active MTN or Airtel SIM card — Your phone must be connected to the network.
- Your child's Student Code — This unique code links your child to their school records on DesisPay. You should have received it from the school at the time of enrollment or when the school joined DesisPay.
- The DesisPay USSD short code — This code is provided by the school or can be found on DesisPay's website. It is typically a short dial code that works on both MTN and Airtel.
- Your registered phone number — For security, some schools require that the USSD request comes from a phone number registered as the parent or guardian.
How Schools Upload Results to DesisPay
Understanding the process helps set expectations. Here is what happens on the school's side:
- Teachers enter marks and grades into the DesisPay school management system (ERP) throughout the term.
- At the end of term, the school administration reviews and approves the final results.
- Once approved, results are published on DesisPay and become accessible to parents.
- Parents are notified via SMS that results are available.
- Parents can then check results via USSD, SMS, or the DesisPay app/website.
Results are only available once the school publishes them. If you dial the USSD code and results are not yet available, it means the school has not yet released them. Check with the school or wait for the SMS notification.
Step-by-Step: Checking Results via USSD
Follow these simple steps to check your child's school results using USSD.
Dialling the USSD Code
- On your phone's dial pad, enter the DesisPay USSD short code. For example:
*XXX*YYY#(replace with the actual code provided by your school or DesisPay). - Press the Call/Send button to initiate the USSD session.
- The DesisPay USSD menu will appear on your screen.
Navigating the Menu
- Select "Check Results" from the main menu. This is typically option 2 or 3 on the menu. Enter the corresponding number and press Send.
- Enter your child's Student Code when prompted. Type the code carefully and press Send.
- Select the term you want to check. The menu will show available terms (e.g., Term 1, Term 2, Term 3). Select the relevant term.
- Your child's results will be displayed on your screen.
Reading the Results
The USSD screen will typically show:
- Student name and class
- Subject names with corresponding grades or marks (e.g., Mathematics: A, English: B+, Science: 78%)
- Overall position in class (if the school includes this)
- Teacher's or headteacher's comment (abbreviated due to screen space)
- Aggregate or total score (depending on the school's grading system)
Because USSD screens have limited space, the information may be spread across multiple pages. Use the "Next" or "More" option to view additional subjects or details.

Understanding the Grading System
Different schools in Uganda use different grading systems. Here is a guide to the most common ones:
Primary School Grading (P.1 - P.7)
| Grade | Marks Range | Description |
|---|---|---|
| D1 | 90 - 100 | Distinction 1 |
| D2 | 80 - 89 | Distinction 2 |
| C3 | 70 - 79 | Credit 3 |
| C4 | 60 - 69 | Credit 4 |
| C5 | 50 - 59 | Credit 5 |
| C6 | 40 - 49 | Credit 6 |
| P7 | 35 - 39 | Pass 7 |
| P8 | 30 - 34 | Pass 8 |
| F9 | Below 30 | Fail |
Secondary School Grading (S.1 - S.6)
Secondary schools in Uganda typically follow the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) grading system:
- O-Level (S.1 - S.4): Uses the D1-F9 scale similar to primary school.
- A-Level (S.5 - S.6): Uses a letter grade system (A, B, C, D, E, O, F) with principal and subsidiary pass classifications.
DesisPay displays results using whatever grading system the school has configured, so what you see will match the format your child's school uses.
Privacy and Security of Results
DesisPay takes the privacy of student results very seriously. Here is how results data is protected:
- Restricted access — Only registered parents or guardians linked to a student's account can view their results. The phone number used to check results must be registered on the student's DesisPay profile.
- Encrypted data — All results data is encrypted both in transit and at rest, using the same security standards used by banks.
- No public sharing — Results are never shared in group chats, WhatsApp groups, or public forums. Each parent receives only their own child's results.
- Audit trail — Every results access is logged, so schools can see who accessed which student's results and when.
Unlike WhatsApp group-based result sharing (which is unfortunately common in Uganda), DesisPay ensures that only authorized parents see a student's results. This protects student privacy and prevents embarrassment.
What If Someone Else Checks Your Child's Results?
If you suspect someone unauthorized has accessed your child's results:
- Contact DesisPay support immediately.
- The team can review the access logs to see which phone numbers were used.
- You can request that certain numbers be blocked from accessing your child's records.
- The school can also update the authorized parent/guardian list on DesisPay.
Troubleshooting USSD and SMS Result Issues
"Results Not Available"
If you receive a message saying results are not yet available:
- The school has not yet published results. Contact the school to ask when results will be released.
- You may be checking the wrong term. Make sure you selected the correct term in the USSD menu.
- The school may still be processing results. Be patient — schools often need a few days after exams end to compile and approve results.
"Invalid Student Code"
- Double-check the Student Code. It is case-sensitive and must be entered exactly as provided.
- Contact the school bursar or administration to confirm the correct Student Code.
- If the school recently joined DesisPay, codes may have been updated.
"USSD Session Timed Out"
USSD sessions automatically end after about 180 seconds of inactivity:
- Respond to each prompt quickly.
- If the session times out, simply dial the code again and start over.
- Use the SMS method if you find USSD too time-pressured.
"No Response to SMS"
- Ensure you sent the SMS to the correct short code number.
- Check that your SMS format is correct (RESULTS [Code] [Term]).
- Wait up to 5 minutes for a reply. During peak times, there may be a slight delay.
- Try again if no response is received after 5 minutes.
Beyond Results: What Else Can Parents Do via USSD?
The DesisPay USSD platform is not limited to checking results. Parents can also use it to:
- Check school fees balance — See outstanding fees without internet access.
- Pay school fees — Make MTN MoMo or Airtel Money payments via USSD.
- Receive attendance alerts — Get notified if your child is absent from school.
- View upcoming events — Check dates for exams, parent meetings, and school holidays.
- Send pocket money — Top up your child's S-Wallet for boarding school expenses.
This makes DesisPay's USSD service a comprehensive school management tool that fits in every parent's pocket, regardless of the type of phone they own.
